How to use the thread maker

  1. 1. Write or paste your long post

    Draft the whole thread as one piece of text. Two blank lines force a new post, which is handy for keeping a list item or a punchline on its own.

  2. 2. Let it split automatically

    The thread maker counts characters with X's own counting library (emoji and CJK count 2, links 23), so no post goes over the limit, and ends each post at a sentence end or line break where it can. Only very long words (over 100 characters, like a pasted hash) may be cut.

  3. 3. Pick a numbering style

    Add (1/5) at the end, 1/ at the start, or no numbers at all. The numbering is counted inside the 280-character limit.

  4. 4. Copy each post into X

    Copy post 1, publish it, then reply to yourself with post 2 (or use the + button in the X composer to stack the whole thread before posting).

How does it decide where to split?
It counts characters the way X does and fills each post up to the 280 limit, ending it at a sentence end or line break when one is close, otherwise at a space. Only very long words (over 100 characters) may be cut, and links never are. It also avoids leaving a tiny last post. Two blank lines in your text always start a new post.
Can I add numbering like 1/5 to my tweets?
Yes. Choose numbering at the end, e.g. (1/5), at the start, e.g. 1/, or none. The numbers are counted inside the character limit.
Is my text private?
Yes. Splitting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to our server; it is only saved in your own browser so a refresh doesn't lose your draft.
Does it work for other languages?
